Brasilia: Judge Cármen Lúcia, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), sent a request to the Brazilian Prosecutor’s Office to open an investigation to President Jair Bolsonaro for spreading false news about the elections, Prensa Latina publishes.
The portal Brasil 247 assures that the request was made by parliamentarians of the Workers’ Party who are trying to investigate Bolsonaro’s statements issued in a live broadcast on Thursday of last week, in which he disseminated non-existent information about the electronic ballot box and the Brazilian electoral process.
According to the magistrate, the accusations of the legislators are serious and Bolsonaro’s demonstrations ‘may, in theory, constitute a crime’ of an electoral nature, of illegal use of public property and of an attack on the independence of the powers of the Republic.
For the congressmen, in the ex-military’s statements, “there was administrative impropriety due to the use of TV Brasil to broadcast live, that is, public resources were used by the president to attack political opponents and the Superior Electoral Court.”
In the same way, as they emphasize in their demand, anticipated electoral propaganda; abuse of political and economic power and practice of the crime of spreading false electoral news was carried out.
In this context, Bolsonaro was also included the day before as being investigated by the STF in a case in which the dissemination of fake news against authorities is investigated.
This decision was made by Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes, who accepted the request of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) to investigate the president for his claims about possible fraud in the electronic ballot boxes used in the general election fair since 1996.
Moraes cites 11 possible crimes committed by the president and his advisers during the broadcast made by the social network Facebook to gather alleged cases of fraud that occurred in the 2014 and 2018 elections.
