Havana: The willingness to collaborate in the scientific field, including the exchange of information on anti-Covid vaccine candidates for convalescents, is ratified today in a letter that Cuban experts will send to President Joe Biden, Prensa Latina reported.

Mayda Mauri, first vice president of the Group of Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Companies of Cuba (BioCubFarma), explained that the document will be available next week and they will enable a link so that professionals and technicians from the rest of the world can sign electronically in support of the work carried out in the Caribbean island in the confrontation with the pandemic, creation of innovative vaccines and elimination of other diseases.

At a press conference, scientists from several research centers on the Island added that in addition to the existing cooperation between both nations in the fight against cancer, there may also be possibilities for collaboration related to the development of the Soberana Plus immunogen by the Finlay Vaccine Institute, the only one of its kind in the world for convalescents.

Dr. Agustín Lage, advisor to the presidency of BioCubaFarma, highlighted the vaccination coverage of Cuba above 99 percent in the child and adult population against 13 diseases, with eight immunogens of national production.

Lage recalled the high standards of good practice in the manufacture of vaccines applied in Cuba, rated by the scientific journal Nature as the best established in developing countries.

With the implementation of the Child Vaccination Scheme, it was possible to eradicate diseases such as poliomyelitis, diphtheria, measles, whooping cough, rubella and mumps in the country, as well as two severe clinical forms in children less than one year of age: neonatal tetanus and tuberculosis meningitis, according to official sources. .

Likewise, it allowed the reduction of morbidity and mortality by more than 95 percent due to typhoid fever, meningococcal disease and hepatitis B.

In official he also highlighted the cooperation with Washington in cancer research.

On the other hand, in terms of confronting Covid-19, he explained that the island registered 41,185 infected per million inhabitants, 311 deaths for a lethality of 0.76 percent, while the mass vaccination with Abdala, designed by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB).

Similarly, he continues the health intervention in territories and risk groups with the candidate Soberana 02 and Soberana Plus, from the Finlay Vaccine Institute (IFV).

Added to the three proposals mentioned above are Mambisa, made to be applied nasal, which has already received authorization to start phase II of clinical trials; and Sovereign 01.
