Hanoi: Vietnam people once again evoked today who they consider one of the foreign leaders that made the greatest contributions to the country’s independence, Fidel Castro, on the 95th anniversary of the leader of the Cuban Revolution.
In the first square in the world named after Fidel, in the central city of Dong Ha, leaders of Quang Tri Province and the Union of Friendship Organizations placed flowers at the foot of the monument to the Commander-in-Chief.
The assistants pointed out that among the innumerable gestures of Fidel towards the Vietnamese people, there are two that they will never forget.
One, when in the middle of the war of liberation he said that ‘For Vietnam we are willing to give even our own blood’; and the other, when in 1973 he became the first and only statesman to visit the newly liberated areas of the south, in particular Quang Tri.
Converted into a sociocultural and recreational space where acts of solidarity with Cuba are usually held, Fidel Castro Square was inaugurated in September 2018 to precisely remember his passing there.
This Friday, the Vietnamese media published various materials in which they recalled Fidel’s three visits to the Indochinese nation (the others in 1995 and 2003) and his contributions to the country’s independence and development, as well as to the revolutionary international movement.
In addition, Vietnamese who studied or worked in Cuba shared anecdotes of their encounters with Fidel, including photos, on their Facebook profiles and other social networks. “Today is Uncle Fidel’s birthday, always grateful to him and the Cuban people for educating thousands of Vietnamese students in the days when Vietnam was still divided into North and South! ” wrote one of them, Quang Ngan Bui.
