El intelectual brasileño Frei Betto reconoce avances del Plan de Soberanía Alimentaria y Educación Nutricional en Mayabeque.

Mayabeque, Cuba: The Brazilian writer and popular educator Frei Betto recognized the progress in the implementation of the Food Sovereignty and Nutrition Education Plan, in a tour of agricultural communities in San José de las Lajas, in the province of Mayabeque, Cubadebate reports.

During his visit, Betto inquired about the food distribution process and the links they maintain with schools, day care centers, maternity homes and families.

Faced with the question about the losses in the field, the producer Jorge Francisco Medinas Cruz, owner of the “La Chivería” farm explained that they work in a closed circuit, and despite the fact that the losses are minimal; they are reused in feeding the animals.

Among the main crops of the locality are tomatoes, lettuce, coffee, guava and beans, to which organic products are applied for their growth and prevent the spread of pests.

The representative of urban, suburban and family agriculture from San José de las Lajas, Asiel Alonso Gómez, explained that the community has 172 patios and 52 plots and maintains as a priority the implementation of the Food Sovereignty and Nutrition Education Plan with the implementation of progress of various community projects.

Associated with the scientific complex of the province, made up of the Institute of Animal Sciences, the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences, the National Center for Agricultural Health and the Agrarian University of Havana, they have collaborated with the development of undergraduate and graduate research, becoming in a scientific setting.

During his visit to the Zaragoza community, he was able to realize the use of the soils, where peasants and peasants in small plots obtained the fruits of their perseverance and work.

The days for the Food Sovereignty and Nutrition Education Plan are organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, the Cuban Association of Social Communicators and the United Nations Food Organization and will be held until December 3, 2021.
