Kremlin denies interest in reestablishing the Soviet Union.

Moscow: The Russian presidential spokesman, Dmitri Peskov, denied today that the Kremlin is trying to reestablish the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), on the 30th anniversary of the signing of the treaty that caused its disintegration, Prensa Latina publishes.

The official thus responded to the statements of the United States Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs, Victoria Nuland, who expressed Washington’s concern that Russian President Vladimir Putin seeks to reestablish the USSR “as a project of his legacy.”

Speaking to the press, Peskov recalled that the associations and alliances of former Soviet republics appeared a long time ago and are developing “at different speeds.”

He clarified that the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), the Eurasian Economic Union (UEE) and the State of the Union of Russia and Belarus are not attempts to reincarnate the Soviet Union, the Sputnik news agency reported.

The head of the Kremlin press office noted that independent sovereign states were formed, strengthened and developed successfully on the territory of the former USSR, and they treat each other on the basis of mutual respect, trust and mutual understanding and non-interference in the affairs of others.
