Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Army General Mark Milley.

Washington: The head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the United States, Army General Mark Milley, warned that far from decreasing, the risk of a significant confrontation between the great world powers is increasing.

“We are entering a world that is becoming more unstable and the possibility of significant international conflict between great powers is increasing, not decreasing,” Milley said during an appearance before the House Armed Services Committee.

Along with Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, the general answered questions from congressmen about the military budget requested by the Joe Biden government for fiscal year 2023 (which begins on October 1) and according to observers it is one of the largest investments in national security in United States history.

The senior officer defended the increase in the military budget (four percent more than in 2022) by stating that his country is facing two global powers, China and Russia.

At the end of March, Biden presented to Congress a budget project of 5.79 billion dollars, with a request for greater spending for military issues, a fact that coincided with the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Just for kyiv and the reinforcement of the eastern flank of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the Biden administration decided on 6.9 billion dollars.
