Caracas: The contact held this week between President Nicolás Maduro and the elected president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, in view of the resumption of relations, monopolizes the spotlight today in the events of Venezuela, Prensa Latina publishes.

Through his account on the social network Twitter, the Venezuelan president reported on Wednesday about a conversation held with the next ruler of the neighboring country, which revolved around topics of interest such as the situation in the border region and peace.

“I spoke with the elected president of Colombia Gustavo Petro, and on behalf of the Venezuelan people, I congratulated him on his victory”.

We discussed the willingness to restore normalcy at the borders, various issues about peace and the prosperous future of both peoples,” Maduro said on the communication platform.

In an official statement issued on the occasion of the electoral victory of the standard-bearer of the Historical Pact and his running mate Francia Márquez, the Bolivarian Executive expressed its willingness to work on the construction of a renewed phase of relations with Colombia.

The victory of Petro and Márquez at the polls generated wide repercussions in Venezuela during the week, including the declarations of Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino, who advocated the construction of spaces for peace and union in the border region between the two countries.

“We hope that from now on, the borders between Venezuela and Colombia will be spaces of peace and union between our peoples, linked to each other by the same history and great spirit of Simón Bolívar,” the headline underlined on his Twitter account.

For its part, the National Assembly (Parliament) of Venezuela approved an agreement saluting the triumph of Gustavo Petro in the presidential elections, and also expressed its support for all the initiatives of the next Colombian government aimed at materializing peace in that country.

The first vice president of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), Diosdado Cabello, in turn valued as positive the approach of the elected president of Colombia with the Venezuelan government to address an eventual reestablishment of relations.

“President Petro has already spoken with President Nicolás Maduro, (…) to find a way to resume relations between these two neighboring and brotherly peoples, it seems that a promising horizon is opening up in that regard,” said Cabello during his usual Con program. el Mazo Dando, broadcast in the middle of the week.

In February 2019, Maduro announced his government’s decision to break political and diplomatic ties with Colombia, blaming the administration of Iván Duque for supporting aggression against the Bolivarian nation, in collusion with the United States and the Venezuelan extreme right. (BSH)
