Científicos de Mayabeque participaron en estudio sobre deterioro cognitivo relacionado con la edad.

Mayabeque, Cuba: Scientists from the National Center for Bio-preparations, located in Mayabeque, and the Clinical Surgical Teaching Hospital Salvador Allende, in Havana, participate in a study in female mice to understand age-related cognitive impairment, based on the evaluation of behavioral, pathological and biochemical markers.

The research was carried out by specialists from the BIOCEN Antianemic and Nutraceutical Laboratory and the Pathology Department of said medical institution.

For the study, young and older female mice were used to evaluate different memory mechanisms, says an article published in the Journal of Biomedical Engineering and Research.

The results of the experiment showed that older animals responded significantly later to heat during the hot plate test to assess pain sensitivity.

Likewise, in older adults were observed an increase in glucose concentration and in the population of nuclear polymorphs in serum.

In contrast, the lymphocyte population was significantly lower in the aged mice relative to the young animals.

In the latter, a significant decrease in the size of the thymus (organ of the immune system) and the brain was obtained.

This research seeks to characterize age-related disorders and evaluate drugs for their treatment.
