Havana, Cuba: The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, recalled today the revolutionary leaders Fidel Castro and Camilo Cienfuegos, when evoking the founding 62 years ago of the National Revolutionary Militias (MNR), Prensa Latina publishes.

In his account of the social network Twitter, the president recalled the act of creation of that force in the old Presidential Palace (now the Museum of the Revolution), where Commander Camilo Cienfuegos addressed the people of Cuba for the last time, two days before of his physical disappearance.

‘On October 26, 1959, Camilo Cienfuegos delivered his last and unforgettable speech. The verses of Bonifacio Byrne still shake in his voice: ´ If it is torn to shreds, it will be my flag one day? our dead raising their arms will still be able to defend it!… ´ ”, recalled the Cuban president.

In his speech, he also recognized as the Hero of Yaguajay, denounced the series of bombings by airplanes from the United States on the Caribbean island, and ratified the will to defend the Homeland from those attacks.

In another message on Twitter, Díaz-Canel also recalled the words of the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, who defined the role of the MNR in defending the country ?with all the forces of the people, with all the arms of the people, with all the hearts of the people ?.

There were various historical moments when the MNR accompanied the Cuban people, among them the invasion of Playa Girón, the Literacy Campaign, and the custody of student and work centers.

Years later, in the face of threats from the US administration of Ronald Reagan (1981-1989), Fidel Castro created the Territorial Troops Militias on January 20, 1980, a continuation of those first popular militias.
