Mayabeque, Cuba: The Manglar Vivo project is underway in Batabanó with the aim of defending the natural heritage.

It is an immediate priority in recent times for all its benefits to insert a greater number of people committed to the functions and importance of this and other projects, declared the head of the section of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment of the Republic of Cuba ( CITMA) in the territory, Elenne Quiñones Echevarría.

The sowing or cultivation of mangroves on the coast of the town for several years has been a prioritized task where several factors intervene and a sample of them are the first specimens on the coastline of the protected area, the specialist added.

Coastal peoples have historically been faithful guardians of their nature. Surgidero de Batabanó has a close link with the mangroves, the sea and fishing, natural elements typical of this community.

Considered the most productive ecosystems, they act as nurseries for fish and shellfish species, serve as a home for a great variety of birds and other marine organisms, protect the coast against erosion, storm surges, storms and hurricanes and function as lungs of the environment.

The immediate projects are aimed at conserving, protecting and increasing mangrove planting.
