Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel highlighted today the celebration of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, as the Island meets its first anniversary as an observer state of the Eurasian Economic Union (UEE by its Spanish initials), Prensa Latina publishes.
By intervening in the meeting organized by videoconference from this city, the president pointed out that this year his country took steps to advance towards a mutually beneficial relationship with the nations that make up the bloc, based on respect, trust and collaboration.
Led by the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, who is the temporary head of the UEE, the meeting is attended by heads of State or Government of the rest of its member countries: Russia, Belarus, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan, as well as Uzbekistan, that like Cuba it has observer status.
Díaz-Canel said that since the last meeting in October, the Island accompanied the different events organized by Union actors, among them the session of the Intergovernmental Commission, in Yerevan, Armenia; and meetings between Customs Chiefs on collaboration, information exchange and mutual aid.
He considered the country’s exchanges with the Gamaleya National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology and the Russian Direct Investment Fund to be encouraging, to carry out studies that allow combining the vaccines from Cuba and Russia against the coronavirus that causes Covid-19.
He cautioned that the results of these investigations may also be beneficial to the rest of the Eurasian partners; as well as the possibility of producing and supplying Cuban vaccines, based on requests from the Union.
At the same time, he highlighted the participation of representatives from Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia in the recently held II Cuba 2021 Business Forum, which was attended by 2,300 businessmen from 86 countries, 23 Chambers of Commerce and 41 Promotion Agencies.
He stressed that the event became a meeting place for foreign and national businessmen to promote the Cuban exportable offer and business opportunities in the country.
The Cuban head of state announced the visit to Havana, in the coming days, of the Minister of Integration and Macroeconomics of the Eurasian Economic Commission (CEE), Sergei Gláziev, and the holding of the second session of the Joint Commission.
He reported that in this context the signing of the Joint Collaboration Plan for the period 2021-2025 is expected, which includes more than 30 actions in sectors of economy, commerce, finance, health, biotechnology, agro-industry, culture, sports and communications.
He explained that these initiatives will contribute to the strengthening of inter-business ties and the alignment between the Strategic Guidelines for the Development of Eurasian Economic Integration until 2025 and the National Plan for Economic and Social Development of Cuba until 2030.
Díaz-Canel reiterated the firm will of the Caribbean island to maintain an active participation as an observer state of the UEE.
The Supreme Eurasian Economic Council is the governing body of the Union in charge of articulating the strategy, direction and progress of the integration process of the bloc created in 2015, which has among its priorities the promotion of the free movement of goods, services, capital and work.
