Havana, Cuba: The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, today reaffirmed the demand for the lifting of the United States blockade against the island, on the 60th anniversary of the officialization of that hostile policy, Prensa Latina publishes.
In his Twitter profile, the Cuban president stated: The Revolutionary Government, on behalf of the people of Cuba, emphatically demands the end of the blockade imposed by the United States. Our denunciation will remain firm and unchanged until this inhuman and illegal policy ceases. #60DeResistancia.
Executive order 3447, signed by US President John F. Kennedy on February 3, 1962, formalized the actions of that power against the nascent Cuban Revolution, which since its triumph three years earlier had to face from covert operations to the mercenary invasion by Playa Girón (Bay of Pigs), in 1961.
With the declared intention of causing hunger and discouragement in the population of the island, and promoting the overthrow of the government, this policy intensified and underpinned during these six decades with laws such as the Torricelli (1992) and Helms-Burton (1996), despite the almost unanimous rejection of the international community.
In the last five years, the United States has strengthened the siege against this Caribbean nation with the imposition of more than 240 new unilateral coercive measures issued by Republican President Donald Trump (2017-2021), 55 of them in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Failing to fulfill its campaign promises, the current Democratic administration of Joe Biden maintains and expands the economic, commercial and financial siege against Cuba while promoting campaigns of international discredit and internal destabilization.
