Mayabeque, Cuba: The increase in teenage pregnancies currently registered in San Nicolás with respect to previous years is one of the fundamental causes of the increase in the rate of low birth weight births.

The capture of pregnancies at this stage constitutes one of the greatest effects faced by the Maternal and Child Care Program (PAMI), as many of the pregnant women refuse to enter the health center more frequently.

According to the municipal director of health, Araibis Dávila Suárez, there are currently just over 79 pregnant women in the town, 10 less than those carried out last year in the same period, 23 of them are under 20 years of age, therefore more than 20 per percent are considered risky pregnancies.

This factor constitutes one of the causes that allow low birth weight births in the municipality, an indicator that affects the adequate progress of the program since last year and to date exceeds 12 percent in relation to 2021.

The impediment of many of the future adolescent mothers to receive specialized medical attention in the Maternal Home, which influences the stable and safe development of the baby, is added to this.

Promotional actions, the constant work of the clinics, education in the different levels of health care, as well as the need to optimize the work of specialists in the care of future adolescent mothers are some of the goals to be achieved by the medical team in San Nicolás to improve the PAMI indicators.
