Havana, Cuba: Cuba participates this Friday in the XXV Ordinary Meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS), in virtual format.
Topics of regional interest will be discussed at this meeting, such as the actions undertaken by the organization in the field of tourism, trade, transport, prevention and mitigation of natural disasters and the sustainability of the Caribbean Sea, the Granma newspaper reports.
The appointment includes the election of the new Secretary General of the Association and the new Board of Directors of the Council of Ministers and of the Special Committees.
The ACS is a body of consultation, agreement and cooperation, with the purpose of identifying and promoting the implementation of policies and programs among all the countries of the region.
Faced with the new coronavirus, its members undertook different actions to benefit the health of the peoples of the Greater Caribbean. Among them stands out the virtual celebration of the First Extraordinary Meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Ministers of Health on Covid-19, on March 24.
In that appointment, the Cuban Minister of Foreign Relations, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, expressed: “We must not wait, let alone trust, that rich and industrialized countries will come to save our peoples. Little help will come from the North. The responsibility to take up the challenge and to act as our citizens deserve, is ours”.
In turn, he proposed that the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, in coordination with the General Secretary, organize the First Regional Technical Meeting of the Member States and Associate Members of the ACS on covid-19, held on May 4, where they decided to move towards the creation of a multi sectorial technical working group to coordinate the confrontation, mitigation and recovery of the spread of the pandemic in the area.
As stated by the President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, at the VIII Meeting of the ACS, in Nicaragua, on March 29, 2019: “Cuba will continue working for that unity and for the consolidation of our Association “
