Havana: Cuban health and government authorities intensify measures today in the face of the outbreak of Covid-19 that led to a significant increase in patients with the virus this month, Prensa Latina publishes.
As explained the day before by the head of Epidemiology of the Island’s Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Francisco Durán, September has already registered 1 thousand 77 people positive for the new coronavirus and 17 deaths, so it could become the month with the highest number of cases since the beginning of the pandemic.
‘If the behavior of the data remains like this, which we hope will not happen, this month will have the highest number of infections by Covid-19 in the country,’ explained the specialist.
Until today, the month with the most reported cases was August, which accounted for 1,432 people with the virus and eight deaths.
Durán said that the fatality (1.82 percent) reported in this little more than 20 days of September is the highest since June (1.13 percent).
‘This reflects the risk of the dangerous disease, which is not trivial, as many think, and although all Cuban health personnel are working to lower the figures of the last few days, we need the collaboration and awareness of the people’, the epidemiologist stressed.
In almost seven months with positive patients for Covid-19 in Cuba, the periods with the highest number of deaths were April and May, with 57 and 18 cases; and a fatality of 4, 31 percent and 3.29, respectively.
The epidemiologist insisted, repeatedly, on the need to maintain sanitary measures since the number of asymptomatic people when detecting SARS-CoV-2 is constantly increasing and three thousand 60 have already accumulated in the largest of the Antilles, which which represents 59.5 percent of those confirmed to date.
Durán also highlighted that the Island’s authorities are working hard to contain the spread of the virus, but the situation has a high epidemiological complexity due to the dispersion in the number of cases in territories such as Havana and Ciego de Ávila, the most affected by the pandemic.
The central province of Ciego de Ávila has the highest incidence rate of Covid-19 in Cuba during the last 15 days (60, 86 per 100,000 inhabitants), as well as a high dispersion of SARS-CoV-2 present in its 10 municipalities.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, in March of this year, 116 people have died from this disease on the island, while another 4,462, 87 percent of those entire diagnosed, have recovered.
The country’s molecular biology laboratories studied 546,250 real-time PCR tests in that period. In the last month there are more than seven thousand a day and sometimes eight thousand.
