Latin American Dentistry Day.

Mayabeque, Cuba: Dentistry professionals in Mayabeque, like those throughout the country, celebrate their day today.

The Latin American Dentistry Day was instituted in memory of the creation of the Latin American Dental Federation (FOLA), on October 3, 1917. In Cuba, Dr. Antonio Recasens Garrido, orthodontist, pediatric dentist, health practitioner and president of the Dental Society de Cuba, named after the Library of the Faculty of Stomatology of Havana, was the main promoter of this idea and thus on October 3, 1929, this commemoration was institutionalized in Cuba.

According to the official website of the Ministry of Public Health, on the Island the model of care is that of Comprehensive General Stomatology, which guarantees free coverage to 100 percent of the population through which actions of Promotion, Prevention, Healing and Rehabilitation on it, prioritizing the population under 19 years of age, pregnant women and mothers of children under one year of age, disabled and older adults.

Today in the Largest of the Antilles there are 19 thousand 825 professionals between Basic General Stomatologists and Specialists, of the latter with a total of 15 thousand 881, besides, 10 thousand 513 Graduates and Technicians in Stomatological Care and Prosthesis.

The National Health System has a supply of 5,412 Fixed Dental Sets and 490 mobile or simplified dental sets.

Cuba is the only country that manages to provide totally free dental coverage and care to its population since January 1, 1959.
