Cuba celebrates Day of Physical Culture and Sports.

Havana: A small Caribbean country with hundreds of world and Olympic champions in various disciplines, Cuba today celebrates its Day of Physical Culture and Sports, Prensa Latina publishes.

The eastern province of Granma is the headquarters for the festivities, which take into account the measures against Covid-19 caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

The program related to the day includes the exercise of the muscles of children, young people and the elderly in different places, tours of sports centers of outstanding achievements and the delivery of medals and decorations to workers in the sector.

Also, among other planned actions, the winners of the annual science awards of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation will be recognized.

This date coincides with the birth of the best Cuban chess player in history, José Raúl Capablanca, who was born on November 19, 1888 and was world champion from 1921 to 1927.

That same day, but in 1961, Fidel Castro, the leader of the Cuban Revolution that triumphed on January 1, 1959, delivered the final words in the first plenary session of the Voluntary Sports Councils.

As part of that speech, Fidel Castro (1926-2016) assured that “the country needs physical education and it needs sports.”

If the Revolution were to ignore that concern, it would be neglecting a fundamental point that will make possible a healthier and better citizenship, as we aspire to have, he stressed then.

In the opinion of the Cuban president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, sport for everyone has to become a habit and the family must be concerned so that their children practice it and carry out physical education and exercises.
