Washington: An antiviral drug called molnupiravir today focuses the gaze of the scientific community engaged in finding an effective treatment to combat the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which causes Covid-19, Prensa Latina publishes.
Experts from the Institute of Biomedical Sciences of Georgia State University, in the United States, assure that the drug – also identified as MK-4482 / EIDD-2801 – is capable of completely eliminating the transmission of the coronavirus in 24 hours.
“This is the first demonstration of an orally available drug that can quickly block the transmission of SARS-CoV-2,” underline the specialists cited on the Sciencie Daily site.
If treatment is started on time, those infected could obtain great benefits for themselves and the rest of society.
Molnupiravir could stop the patient from progressing to severity, shorten her infection, and prevent community outbreaks.
In this sense, MK-4482 / EIDD-2801 has a broad spectrum activity against respiratory RNA viruses, reduces the amount of viral particles spread by several orders of magnitude, drastically reducing transmission, scientists point out in the journal Nature Microbiology.
Molnupiravir is currently in advanced phase II / III clinical trials in which it is being tested at three different doses every 12 hours for five days in patients with Covid-19.
