62 years ago a new era opened for Cuba. A Revolution, the fruit of the yearnings for freedom of several generations, was then undertaking a feat for the rescue of national dignity, social justice, progress.
After his victorious entry into Havana, Fidel warned: The tyranny has been defeated. The joy is immense. And yet much remains to be done. Let’s not fool ourselves into believing that from now on everything will be easy. Maybe from now on everything will be more difficult.
Those words were premonitory. Hard battles have had to be waged by the Cuban revolutionary process to try to defeat underdevelopment in the midst of constant and tenacious harassment from the great imperialist power, Radio Reloj publishes.
The end of the Cuban Revolution has been heralded many times. But here it is, through thick and thin, fired, tough. He has just overcome a year that brought together many adversities, with very deep traces.
Another Cuban fight against demons
The year 2020 left another proof of the stock of this people. In March, Covid-19 broke into the country and all forces were tensed to face the ravages of the new coronavirus pandemic.
As in most of the world, the economy came to a standstill. But Cuba, this small country with scarce resources, knew how to find ways to contain the spread of the disease, with adequate epidemiological management, organization of health services and application of valuable advances in science, especially in our biotechnology industry.
In Cuban laboratories, work is being done on four vaccine candidates, while the battle against Covid-19 continues and nearly 40 nations have had the knowledge and solidarity of Cuban brigades.
Instead, the Trump administration maintained its aggressive escalation, adding new tensions to an inclement year.
Legitimate socialist option
A tough and challenging year like few others. This is how President Miguel Díaz-Canel described a 2020 that accentuated shortages and witnessed feats waged to maintain a country that defends the option of socialism as legitimate.
This is – as Martí requested – a great task. Cuba opens 2021 with the challenge of starting the Ordering Task, with the monetary and exchange unification, salary increases and elimination of subsidies.
Thus begins a crucial stage of political creativity in the process of updating the economic and social model, in a year in which the Eighth Party Congress will be held to evaluate and define strategies for the historical continuity of the Cuban Revolution.
This one that has managed to overcome fences, attacks, threats and mistakes, supported by a courageous people who disdain those who insist on truncating their course.
