Havana, Cuba: In the context of the Ordering Task, 100 percent of maternity benefits received the salary increase.

“The protection of maternity in Cuba, through the social security system, is a right of Cuban women”, the Cuban Minister of Labor and Social Security, Marta Elena Feito Cabrera, said.

Decree-Law 20, included in the Extraordinary Official Gazette No. 68, on the implementation of the Monetary Reorganization Process, deals with this right, where the transitory procedure for calculating the monetary benefits for maternity of state sector workers is explained. 

And in the 339, of the maternity of the worker, it seeks to grant rights to the working mother and father, in what corresponds to each, to promote shared responsibility with the family in the care and attention of the little son or daughter.

The duration of the pre and postnatal maternity leave is 18 weeks, among the longest at the international level, and after its expiration a social benefit is granted until the child reaches the first year of life. Currently 52 thousand 444 people enjoy these benefits, of which seven are men, the Minister highlighted on the Twitter.

Although 2020 put the health capacities of all the world’s systems to the test, Cuba did not skimp on the well-being of the newborn and the mother.

The Directorate of Medical Records and Statistics of the Ministry of Public Health refers that last year 105 thousand 30 children were born in Cuba, and the nation reached an infant mortality rate of 4.9 per thousand live births, 36 deaths less than in 2019 .

Also, President Miguel Díaz-Canel urged to continue working on the allocation of housing for mothers with several children, and to work with intelligence and adequate monitoring, seeking that there are more births.
