Havana, Cuba: The 8th Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) concludes today after four days of work in which it reaffirmed the socialist course of the Caribbean nation and updated the model and guidelines for such endeavor.
On the final day, the new Central Committee elected the day before by the 300 delegates to the forum, representing the more than 700 thousand militants of the governing organization in Cuba, will have its first plenary meeting.
Today, the Central Committee will be in charge of electing the main positions of the PCC for the period 2021-2026.
Raúl Castro, current first secretary of the PCC, announced that he will not continue in that responsibility.
When presenting the Central Report to the conclave on April 16, he said that he concludes with the satisfaction of having fulfilled, the confidence in the future of the Homeland, with the thoughtful conviction of not accepting a proposal to keep me in the higher positions of the party organization.
He then affirmed that he will continue to serve as one more revolutionary combatant, ready to make my modest contribution until the end of his life.
In the previous day, the congress approved several resolutions, among them the one that updates the conceptualization of the Cuban Economic and Social Model of Socialist Development.
Such document endorses the purpose of building a society with the vision of a sovereign, independent, socialist, democratic, prosperous and sustainable nation.
It recognized the socialist ownership of all the people over the fundamental means of production as the main form of the socio-economic system.
At the same time, it recognizes and is pronounced for diversifying the different forms of ownership and management that are properly interrelated.
It indicates raising the level and quality of life as a permanent priority objective, with emphasis on food and energy security, education and health.
201 guidelines were also adopted on the main directions of work until 2026 in order to channel the priorities of the economy.
The forum approved resolutions on the functioning of the Party and ideological work, as well as on the policy for the selection, training and promotion of cadres.
