Day against Homophobia and Transphobia

Havana: Cuba will celebrate from today until May 30 the XIV edition of the Conference against Homophobia and Transphobia, under the slogan All rights for all people, Prensa Latina reports.

As specified by the National Center for Sex Education (Cenesex), due to the epidemiological situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a program for academic dialogue, social activism and artistic initiatives from virtual spaces is planned.

All this, in order to make visible and combat all kinds of discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, the institution emphasized.

Among the activities is the realization on the 6th of a forum-debate in the newspaper Juventud Rebelde, with the topic Deconstructing myths around homoaffective families and couples, and another, on May 12, on the Cubadebate portal, focused on the Constitution and sexual rights in Cuba: progress and main challenges.

Similarly, on the 15th of the current month, the panel Diverse families: stories of non-hegemonic lives will take place, while, two days later, there will be a discussion on the National Program for the Advancement of Women and the opportunities to confront homophobia and transphobia.

Religious fundamentalisms and non- heteronormative gender identities are other central themes of the call.

According to a statement from Cenesex, the Conference is part of the educational process that must accompany the transformations envisaged in the legal system of the Caribbean country.

This edition occurs in a particular scenario due to the promulgation, in 2019, of the current constitutional text, which protects the guarantees of LGBTI people (Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transgender and Intersex), with the regulation of the principle of equality and not discrimination.

The event has been organized since 2008 by Cenesex, with the purpose of contributing to the integral education of sexuality and the recognition of the rights of all people without distinction, as an exercise of equity and social justice.
