Caracas: The executive secretary of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-Peoples’ Trade Agreement (ALBA-TCP), Sacha Llorenti, today blamed the capitalist model for the global climate crisis.
‘It is not Humanity, it is the unsustainable model of production and consumption. It is capitalism, ” emphasized the head of ALBA-TCP in his account on the social network Twitter.
The Latin American Information Agency (PL) argues that Llorenti recalled that the United States and the countries of the European Union are responsible for 69 percent of the excess in carbon dioxide emissions; “We have common but different responsibilities”, he said.
During the XIX Summit of Heads of State and Government, held on June 24 in Caracas, ALBA-TCP underlined in a special statement that compliance with the commitments of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development is imperative.
In this regard, the regional entity pondered the issues related to the conservation of biological diversity and the fight against desertification and pollution, in order to guarantee the satisfaction of the needs of present and future generations.
The member countries also affirmed that the nationally determined contributions of the Paris Agreement are still insufficient to reach the goal of stabilizing temperature, essential to prevent devastating events and the increase in greenhouse gas emissions.
Faced with this scenario, the ALBA-TCP emphasized the need to deepen the existing cooperation schemes between the regions, to form an international alliance against climate change and other important environmental issues.
Likewise, the Alliance held on July 7 last a special meeting aimed at drawing strategies around environmental challenges, whose agreements will be presented at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, to be held in Glasgow from November 1 to 12 of 2021.
