United Nations: The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) requested a fund of 835 million dollars to support women and girls who require “vital” reproductive health services during 2022, Radio Habana Cuba publishes.
Life-saving sexual and reproductive health services are more vital than ever, Unfpa said when making the call that will benefit those who face crisis situations.
The objective of the UN agency is to reach more than 54 million women, girls and young people in 61 countries in conflict situations and who also face the ravages of Covid-19 and other challenges.
Sexual and reproductive health services are not secondary to other forms of emergency services, she explained, but rather save lives. Now they are more vital than ever, amid the multiple catastrophes that overlap in the world, she said.
More than $ 68 million is needed for services that include protection, response to gender-based violence and the provision of essential products, such as dignity kits containing menstrual pads, soap and winter clothing, Unfpa added.
According to the organization’s report, Haiti is one of the countries with the greatest need for humanitarian funding for sexual and reproductive health services.
The earthquake that shook the Caribbean country last August caused an increase in displacement, violence against women and girls and their vulnerability to crisis situations, the expert in prevention and treatment of gender violence from Unfpa, Taina Camy, said.
According to Camy, the organization is providing counseling and medical services in affected communities across the country.
The list of nations in need of humanitarian funding includes Syria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Venezuela, Bangladesh and Lebanon.
