United Nations: The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, will participate today in a virtual ministerial meeting that addresses the recovery of Covid-19, an event for which more than 50 countries presented proposals for measures, Prensa Latina publishes.
According to its spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, the meeting will be chaired by Japan and co-sponsored by the executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Patricia Espinosa.
At the virtual meeting, Guterres will once again ask all member states, especially members of the Group of 20, to commit to carbon neutrality by 2050, the spokesperson said.
He will also emphasize that it does not have economic sense to spend money on coal plants that will soon become stranded assets and therefore those facilities should not be included in any investment plan, Dujarric added.
More than 60 countries have already confirmed their participation in the virtual event and more than 50 have presented measures to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic.
From the beginning of the emergency, Guterres called to take advantage of the recovery opportunities, once the health crisis has been overcome, to rebuild a safe, healthy, inclusive, more resistant and environmentally friendly world.
In his opinion, one of the keys to addressing the current climate crisis lies precisely in the large emitters of polluting gases: it is necessary for them to commit to carbon neutrality by 2050 because without their contribution, global efforts run the risk of being convicted, he pointed out in April this year.
For this reason, he called to work so that 2020 is the year in which all countries commit to do what is necessary to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050 and ensure that the increase in temperature does not exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius, as stated in the Paris Agreement.
