Event on sustainable development in the era of Covid-19.

United Nations: A high-level event on financing for sustainable development in the era of Covid-19 is meeting today, convened by the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, and the prime ministers of Canada and Jamaica, Prensa Latina publishes.

The event, which will be held mostly virtually, aims to articulate a multilateral, coordinated and comprehensive response to the urgent crisis in financing for development due to the pandemic, its organizers highlight.

Furthermore, Heads of State and Government are expected to adopt an ambitious menu of policy options aimed at recovery in the short term.

The event also aims to mobilize financial resources to achieve the 2030 Agenda and its 17 goals, review the global financial architecture in order to align it with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), and strengthen the resilience and sustainability of countries in the medium and long term.

The high-level meeting on financing for development is part of the parallel activities to the high-level segment of the UN General Assembly, and speeches are planned by senior dignitaries from around the world, including the Prime Minister of Cuba, Manuel Marrero.

According to the president of the General Assembly at its 75th session, Volkan Bozkir, the SDGs contain the plan to better rebuild after the pandemic.

By investing in the recovery of Covid-19 focused on those 17 objectives, it will be possible to strengthen our societies, reduce inequalities, address climate change and boost social and economic growth, he expressed on his official Twitter account.

On September 18, at the annual SDG event, Guterres pointed out that the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development provides the guiding light necessary to end the Covid-19 pandemic, respond to its socio-economic impacts and chart the course towards a transformative recovery.

Today, as a united family of nations we have what it takes to eradicate poverty and hunger, address climate change, achieve gender equality and the 17 SDGs, said the Secretary General,

But the task is daunting, the Portuguese diplomat stressed, ‘the foundations of our world have been shaken to the core by Covid-19’.
