Mayabeque, Cuba: The peasant sector in Mayabeque guarantees more than 80 percent of the production for municipal self-sufficiency. The aim is to increase and diversify every day more the assortments locally.

In the midst of a global economic outlook impacted by the effects of Covid-19, this challenge acquires strategic importance to boost the reserves themselves and reduce imports as much as possible.

The member of the Agri-Food Bureau of the National Association of Small Farmers in the province, Yuleidis Salina Hernández, refers that the cooperative and peasant sector has a fundamental weight in self-sufficiency and also to guarantee food in the Cuban capital.

Collective breeding is one of the alternatives to promote animal production. Salina Hernández added that this strategy plays an important role in each locality.

In productive poles of Mayabeque, the number of areas is increased to achieve superior results in sowing and short-cycle cultivation, in addition to the use of oxen to till the land.
