Mayabeque, Cuba: The protected areas of Mayabeque have an important mission in the Life Task to confront climate change.
The province has a total of 6 protected areas, 4 of them managed by the Flora and Fauna Company of this demarcation. They are the Escaleras de Jaruco natural landscape, the Boca de Canasí Managed Floristic Reserve, the Golfo de Batabanó wildlife refuge and the Sureste del Inglés.
According to the director of conservation of the Mayabeque Flora and Fauna Business, Andy Montero Díaz, the Golfo de Batabanó and Sureste del Inglés wildlife refuge have a strip of mangrove vegetation and are part of the natural barrier against the onslaught of extreme weather events.
These ecosystems are found in less than one percent of the world’s oceans, but they are of vital importance for humans, since they are home to between 25 and 33 percent of all marine life.
