Havana, Cuba: The blockade of the United States against Cuba constitutes a flagrant violation of human rights, the president of the Cuban Association of the United Nations (ACNU), Fermín Quiñones, considered here today, Prensa Latina publishes.
The ambassador also described as criminal the policy exercised against the island for almost 60 years, which slows the development of these guarantees.
Regarding International Human Rights Day, the diplomat condemned the upsurge in hostility from Washington in the midst of Covid-19, with measures that harm the response to the health emergency.
For the first time in almost six decades, the siege caused losses of more than five billion dollars between April 2019 and March 2020, according to official data.
However, Quiñones acknowledged that the island, despite the complex economic outlook, manages to overcome the crisis caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, the cause of the pandemic, in a relevant way, without the need to apply the so-called ‘shock therapies ‘.
The president of the ACNU highlighted the work of the island’s government and the institutions to safeguard the rights of the population, and weighed in on the existing guarantees regarding health, education, life and free expression.
Cuba is internationally recognized for the promotion and enjoyment of these guarantees, indicators for which it was elected for the fifth time as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the period 2021-2023.
The day before, the island’s foreign minister, Bruno Rodríguez, ratified on his Twitter account the will to strengthen the network of laws, institutions, strategies and public policies to improve the execution, promotion and protection of these achievements as part of the development model economic and social.
Today’s commemoration of International Human Rights Day focuses on the effects of the pandemic and the need to rebuild on the respect for universal guarantees, the United Nations website states.
In the context of the date, the University of Havana is holding until tomorrow the III International Seminar Dialogues on Human Rights, focused on the protection of health, childhood and youth.
