Mayabeque, Cuba: Obtaining a new product to promote increased yields in meat and milk production is one of the results of the research work at the Institute of Animal Science, located in Mayabeque.

According to the Doctor in Veterinary Sciences Yanelis García Curbelo, from the monogastric department at ICA, it is related to obtaining prebiotic Fructoica from henequen stems.

This is a residue from the agro-industry, which gives added value to the crop by offering the possibility of using it in obtaining additives for both animals and humans.

“In the current moments of confrontation with the new Coronavirus it plays an important role, since research is being carried out to use national resources in animal nutrition and thus contribute to import substitution,” the Doctor of Science said.

Fructoica is a nutritious base made from natural fiber by-products to stimulate weight gain per day in various species.

“This product has already been used in chicken, pigs, fish and rabbits with positive results in stimulating the immune system, improving metabolic indicators, reducing diarrhea and increasing productive indicators such as weight gain and better conversion?, García Curbelo added.

“In humans it can be used as a functional food, since it constitutes the sugar of diabetics and therefore opens a way for future research to treat diseases in humans such as diabetes, osteoporosis and alterations in lipid and immune metabolism and most importantly from a natural resource that is currently being discarded?, the researcher from the ICA monogastric department concluded.
