Havana: The 60th National Bivalent Oral Polio Vaccination Campaign begins today in Cuba, Prensa Latina reports.
This immunization plan takes place until February 27 and a second stage will be from March 1 to 9, the Ministry of Public Health informed.
Minors under the age of three will receive the anti-polio vaccine, while nine-year-old children will have a second dose of the vaccine. It will be applied in polyclinics and the family doctor’s offices.
Before the triumph of the Revolution in 1959, only two diseases were eradicated in the country, yellow fever and smallpox. But in the revolutionary stage, six other diseases were eliminated with immunization plans.
Polio vaccination campaigns began in Cuba in 1962. The Caribbean nation has conducted it every year since then to protect the population.
Cuba was the first country in Latin America to be declared territory free of this infectious-contagious disease that affects the central nervous system.
