Havana, Cuba: The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, recalled today the tragedy caused by the nuclear accident in the Ukrainian town of Chernobyl and the collaboration of his country in caring for affected children.

The president recalled on his Twitter account the 35 years that have elapsed since the catastrophe in the Ukrainian city of Pripyat, on April 26, 1986, and how the Caribbean nation made the pain of that town its own and offered treatments and cures to thousands of children .

More than 21 thousand infants with illnesses derived from radiation exposure were treated on the Antillean Island between 1989 and 2011, thanks to a program that also strengthened the ties of friendship between Cuba and Ukraine.

The day before, during the Inter-Foreign Ministry Political Consultation Meeting between the two countries, the Cuban Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Anayansi Rodríguez and hers of her Ukrainian counterpart Yevhen Yenin also recalled the 31st anniversary of the start of the Children of Chernobyl program.

The exchange, which took place virtually, also made it possible to evaluate new actions to promote economic-commercial ties, cooperation and political dialogue. At the meeting, both delegations expressed their willingness to continue working to strengthen bilateral relations in areas of common interest, and highlighted the historical ties and solidarity that unite the two nations.

The vice ministers addressed the current epidemiological situation, due to Covid-19, and the possibilities of collaboration in its confrontation; while the Ukrainian side recognized Cuba’s internationalist work at this stage and its biotechnological advances.
