Havana, Cuba: Cuba today remembers Vilma Espín Guillois, a revolutionary combatant and fighter for the emancipation of women and the rights of children, on the 14th anniversary of her death.

In communities and workplaces of the country, activities will be carried out to pay tribute to this protagonist of the clandestine confrontation and the Rebel Army against the tyranny of Fulgencio Batista (1952-1959), and Cuban political leader.

According to Osmayda Hernández, a member of the Secretariat of the Cuban Women Federation (FMC), an organization that Vilma founded and of which she was its first president, the acts will be held as part of a tribute day since last October 10 and will be will extend until Sunday.

It will be the space to honor the women and men who from the science, health and food production sectors have maintained an active participation throughout the confrontation with the Covid-19 pandemic, Hernández recently told the Granma newspaper.

Vilma Espín (1930-2007) was a member of the July 26 Movement, a fighter from the Sierra Maestra (east) together with the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, and since the triumph of 1959 he has worked to guarantee the rights and emancipation of the females.

To achieve that goal, she founded the FMC on August 23, 1960 in order to promote the empowerment of women and their contribution to the growth of the country.

Espín died on June 18, 2007, and her remains rest in the Mausoleum of the Second Eastern Front Frank País, in Santiago de Cuba.
