First of July, Historian's Day.

Mayabeque, Cuba: Every July 1st is celebrated the Historian’s Day in Cuba, in homage to the prominent researcher Emilio Roig de Leuchsenring, who, on this date in 1935, received the status of Historian of the City of Havana.

In her report, Roxana Seijo Coronado, she informs that the day constitutes a space to honor and recognize those who carry out this activity in the country, for their work in research, teaching, dissemination, rescue and preservation of historical heritage.

The current epidemiological situation caused by COVID-19 will not give an inadvertent character to the important celebration. ?Our province is one of the most affected by the coronavirus. As the context improves, some proposed events and organic meetings that, for the moment, are held through videoconferences will be rescued?, Daniel Martínez Quintanal, historian of the municipality of San José de las Lajas commented.

Reinaldo Guerrero Guerrero, president of the Provincial Branch of the Union of Cuban Historians in Mayabeque, explained: ?the proposals for the commemoration of the date are inserted in the tribute day that began on June 17, and will run until July 26 of this year, a date that commemorates the 68th anniversary of the assault on the Moncada barracks, in Santiago de Cuba and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, in Bayamo?.

As part of the activities, prominent members of the Subsidiary in the territory will be recognized. Oscar Sánchez, provincial historian, will receive the award for his lifelong work, the calls for the XXIV National History Congress and the National Research Contest will be held.

Guerrero Guerrero added: ?We have planned a discussion with former combatants at the Santa Elena farm, as well as participation in a pilgrimage with the relatives of ex-combatants, belonging to the July 26 Movement cell, in Nueva Paz and we will finish updating in the Ecured digital platform, the history of each municipality in the province ?.

In her information, Roxana Seijo Coronado, argues that the hygienic-sanitary, restriction and isolation measures, adopted in the province, called for a different celebration on July 1. Once again, the commitment of those who carry out the significant work of rescuing and making the historical-cultural heritage enduring is reaffirmed, becoming identity forgers.

?It is a pride that our work and the role of the Union of Cuban Historians are recognized, above all, its mission projected to cultural and social development. However, we must work more with young people and motivate them to continue what we do today and thus give continuity to this work ?, Martínez Quintanal concluded.
