Potato planting begins in Mayabeque.

Mayabeque, Cuba: Potato planting for the 2021-2022 campaign begins this weekend in the provinces of Mayabeque and Villa Clara, the Trabajadores newspaper reports.

Before the 25th of this month, they will begin in the territories of Matanzas, Artemisa, Cienfuegos, Ciego de Ávila and Isla de la Juventud.

In this contest they will use the seeds multiplied in Cuba, taking into account their quality and varieties. The planting of six thousand hectares is planned, only in areas that have guaranteed irrigation techniques with electric central pivot machines.

The specialist of the Directorate of Various Crops of the Ministry of Agriculture, Enel Espinosa, reported that these tasks have been delayed due to difficulties with insurance for a highly technical crop.

Forecasts point to average yields of 20.43 tons per hectare. The Ministry of Agriculture expects that the harvests of the campaign will add up to 120,914 tons.

As every year they will have different destinations, including fresh consumption, conservation in refrigerators, industry and seed for the next stage.

The results will depend on the climatic conditions, the low altitude above sea level where they are grown and the limitations of resources and technologies.

The potato is a tuber in great demand in the consumption of Cubans given its versatility in the kitchen and its good qualities of flavor, nutritional properties, contribution of minerals, vitamins, fibers and antioxidants.
