Capturan atún de aleta amarilla en área protegida Boca de Canasí.

Mayabeque, Cuba: Fishermen Luis Alberto Roca Hernández and Reinier Rodríguez Verde caught a yellowfin tuna weighing more than 700 pounds after four hours of work, using a camera as a boat, according to posts from the Facebook group Pescadores en camera y corcho in Cuba.

The specimen was trapped in the Boca de Canasí protected area, belonging to Santa Cruz del Norte, as a result of poaching.

The director of the Puerto Escondido biological station, Yamilet Llanes Leiva, specified that although the activity was carried out with nylon and a hook, it constitutes a violation of the regulations for the safety of the fishermen.

The biologist also noted that the capture of a yellowfin tuna reveals a new species in the area. In previous studies they had never reported the presence of these specimens in the coastal strip.

To bring the huge fish to shore, the fishermen asked a boat for help.

Experts from the Boca de Canasí protected area will carry out an investigation to corroborate the data and register the new specimen.
