Mayabeque, Cuba: In the third Varadero Half Marathon, more than one hundred athletes from Mayabeque competed and of them Francisco Rodney Estévez scored another important victory when he arrived victorious at the finishing line with a time of one hour, 10 minutes and 19 seconds.

The Spaniard Bruno Villazón, arrived in second place with one hour, ten minutes and 43 seconds and almost two minutes later, Cristian de los Santos from Santiago came third.

The Iberian, winner of the Valencia Half Marathon, arrived in Varadero well prepared as he intended to win and almost achieved it, since from the start he remained side by side with the man from Bejucal, who managed to break away briefly with two kilometers to go, until that Villazón finally recovered and together they continued to be very close.

In the final stretch of the race Rodney took the extra and achieved a slight advantage that allowed him to triumph and be crowned monarch.

In a telephone dialogue that I had with the brand new winner, he indicated that he intended to improve his personal record in the distance, but the prevailing strong air forced him to change tactics, as he observed that the Spaniard was in great shape and gave him no respite during the event. .

He also confessed that from the first 1,500 meters he felt slight discomfort and pain in his calves, and he did not want to make an effort to look for marks, only to finish and win the race. Regarding the Spaniard, he said that he is an athlete of a very good level, with experience and results, and assured him that he will attend the fourth edition next year.

Estévez recently won the Cacahual-Ciudad Deportiva Half Marathon and the previous week he was crowned monarch of the ten thousand meters in the Cuba Cup. He assured that despite the limitations due to Covid-19, he never stopped preparing in his municipality together with coach Ángel Rodríguez.

  “My greatest aspiration is to be part of the Cuban Delegation that will attend the XXIV Central American and Caribbean Games that will be held next year in San Salvador, and for that I will continue to strive,” he concluded. (BSH)
