Taller de cunicultura: alternativa para incrementar la producción local de carne.

Mayabeque, Cuba: A workshop on rabbit farming, techniques and processes for raising rabbits as an alternative to increase meat production on a local scale took place at the El Abra farm in the municipality of Güines.

Producers from various territories of Mayabeque participated in the event with experiences in the use of skins and fecal matter, preparation of natural feed, reproduction cycles and advantages of feeding on this breed included as protein-rich minor cattle.

The coordinator of the Cuban Association of Animal Production in San José de Las Lajas, Milton Gómez Santana, specified that they use sweet potatoes and cassava for feeding rabbits, both of which are energy products, and fodder. All these alternatives contribute to substituting imports.

The family of Gloribel Ordoñez from the municipality of Madruga works to promote guinea pig production in the province.

They currently have a mass of 40 breeders with very good results.

The son of the family states that this task requires time and dedication to adequately guarantee the feeding and hygiene of this strictly herbivorous rodent mammal.

The young man, a veterinary medicine student, works on several projects on the benefits of eating guinea pig meat to prevent the onset of cancer. This is because the food has an enzyme that prevents the development of the disease.
