Mayabeque, Cuba: Between February 25 and March 1, the potato harvest planted with seed multiplied nationally will begin in Mayabeque, a crop that despite being highly demanded by the population shows productive decreases in relation to last year, the Cuban News Agency reports.
The harvest will be carried out according to the plant development of the crop and depending on the climate. It is expected that with seed multiplied nationally, 27,200 tons of the product will be obtained, the director of the Ministry of Agriculture, Enel Espinosa Hernández, explained.
The official specified that a total production of 98,394 tons is planned, which will be distributed to the different priority destinations in the country.
For example, he clarified that seven thousand tons are destined to leave as seed, while for the industry that produces the frying and pre-frying modalities, nine thousand tons will go.
The largest amount of what is harvested, 76 thousand 769 tons, will be guaranteed for the consumption of the population and other destinations, while a certain amount is reserved for the balance of the Military Agricultural Union (UAM) and for the Agriculture of the Ministry of the Interior (Minint ).
For the 2020-2021 cold season, five thousand 10 hectares of potatoes were planned to be sown with seed multiplied nationally, 1,600 hectares for 31.9 percent and 3,410 hectares with imported, representing 68.1 percent, of the area to plant.
