Results of the Agricultural Sector of Mayabeque Stand out in the Countr

Mayabeque, Cuba: With five important agricultural poles consisting of farms, Basic Units of Cooperative Production, and peasant cooperatives, the agricultural sector of Mayabeque is recognized in the country for its productive potential.

Since the creation of the province in 2011, more than 300 thousand tons of various crops have been collected annually, result of factors such as the presence of the Agro-Forestry Business Group (GEAF by its Spanish initials) and the constant work of the National Association of Small Farmers, together with the knowledge of the country men and the natural wealth of the soils of this region of western Cuba.

The companies of Quivicán, Batabanó, Melena del Sur, Güines and Nueva Paz in Mayabeque constitute the center of the work of these agricultural poles called to develop a more active role, based on the policy of the country’s top management to prioritize food production.

The growth in the collection and commercialization of food, vegetables, grains and fruits has had a remarkable growth although far from satisfying the needs of the population, points out Juan Carlos Borges Estévez, state director of agriculture in Mayabeque.

The province’s effort is not only in the aforementioned agricultural poles, but also extends to the rest of the municipalities. Santa Cruz del Norte, Jaruco, San Nicolás and Bejucal are also looking for formulas for the development of their own agriculture and to achieve the food sovereignty desired by all.
