Beirut: Covid-19 today maintained its passage of a thousand or more daily cases in Lebanon as a result of which the authorities value extending a blockade of the country beyond the next day 30, Prensa Latina publishes.
Since last 14, the eastern Mediterranean nation has observed a lockdown with the closure of public places, traffic restrictions and a curfew from 5:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. local time.
However, the pandemic remains relentless and from February to date, infections totaled almost 117,500 and deaths more than 900, while the average number of infections continues to exceed 1,000 and more.
The 15 percent positivity rate in the past two weeks raises another alarm, because it is clear that the one-off measures did not stop the spread.
The acting Minister of Health, Hamad Hassan, announced that by mid-February Lebanon will receive the anti-Covid19 vaccine obtained by the US firm Pfizer, which could be late given the current rate of infection, experts estimate.
With the intention of providing relief to the health sector, the authorities decreed the blockade in order to create better conditions for medical care.
And there was even an increase in the number of beds in intensive care units, although not enough due to the ongoing avalanche and the lack of medical personnel, many of them infected and others who decided to go abroad because of the economic crisis.
