Mayabeque, Cuba: The quality of the sweet potato plantations of the young farmer Yorlandys Díaz Cabrera, belonging to the Base Business Unit (UEB) Republic of Guinea, belonging to Melena del Sur, is relevant.
In the midst of the insufficient inputs available for cultural services, given the economic situation and the progressive increase in the prices of fertilizers in the international market, the results of Díaz Cabrera are surprising.
On the ground, a good-sized tuber is shown without the ravages of the voracious Tetouan, an insect that causes the unpleasant taste that invalidates it even for animal consumption.
Yorlandys and Lionel Herrera Gómez, UEB phytosanitary, with greater technical knowledge, explained the secret: care in planting, sufficient irrigation and ecological products from the Center for Entomophages and Entomopathogens (CREE).
«In the 12 hectares of sweet potato, 6 of white mass and the rest of orange mass, we expect a yield of around 14 tons per area. Irrigation effects for almost 15 days will prevent us from reaching an aspiration of 17”, Herrera Gómez said.
“The quality is at the level of what the people deserve, for this it is also very important to search for sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives produced in the CREE”, the phytosanitary added.
