Every September 30, the International Translation Day is celebrated, with the aim of showing solidarity among its members and highlighting the enormous value of this profession in an increasingly globalized world.
On this date died, Jerónimo de Estridón, popularly known as Saint Jerónimo, patron saint of translators and responsible for the translation of the Bible from Hebrew to Latin and Greek.
Although the International Federation of Translators had been celebrating the day for years, it was not until 2017 that the General Council of the United Nations decided to make this day official.
A resolution that the entire community of translators happily celebrated, but that the world also thanked, due to the hard work that has been reflected in the digital world by these professionals and even by fans of languages.
Proof of this are the millions of subtitles that are uploaded to the internet daily to be able to consume YouTube videos, Technology, Entertainment and Design (TED) talks and even series and movies, that without leaving aside the more traditional translators that are dedicated to bringing the literary world to every corner of the planet.
Every year, a theme is chosen for World Translation Day and a lottery is held to design posters and campaign materials.
After COVID separated the world, the theme for World Translation Day for 2021 is: “United for translation”.
