Mayabeque, Cuba: The production of organic matter, derived from animal manure in La Caridad farm of the Credit and Services Cooperative (CCS) Félix González Viego, from Bejucal, constitutes the premise for obtaining food and substituting imports to the country.

The farm’s producer, Sadiel León Alonso, explained: “the use of biological media at harvest has the same effect as fertilizers.”

The application of it to vegetables in the cold season complies with the introduction of agro-ecology, based on the measures approved by the country’s leadership for the benefit of Cuban agriculture.

“In the 55 farms, the ranchers use organic matter derived from their livestock and those dedicated specifically to various crops make greater use of the products purchased through credit”, the president of the grassroots organization of the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP) in the cooperative, Yemilia Acanda Pérez, said.

Agro-ecology encompasses the large-scale planting of vegetables, grains, and fruit trees, and also contributes to the source of income for the country and to the Economic and Social Strategy.
