The United States would again block the entry of international travelers shortly after the alert for the appearance in the world of a new variant of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, an expert warned today.
According to Prensa Latina, the director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases, Dr. Anthony Fauci expressed that the United States will make a decision as quickly as possible, “obviously, as soon as we obtain more information.”
The specialist responded to CNN when asked if the United States should consider the same prohibitions as the United Kingdom and what immediate measures are due in case of the appearance of infections.
First, we want to know if that strain actually evades vaccines, Fauci said.
The country with the worst rates of infections and deaths in the world, reports an average of more than 96 thousand patients per day in the last two weeks and 776 thousand deaths.
The European Union and other major destinations began to close the entry of travelers from Africa after the detection in South Africa of the aggressive strain of SARS-CoV-2, known at the moment as B.1.1.529.
It will take “a few weeks” to obtain details about the new variant of the virus, the World Health Organization noted, urging the public to take extra measures to protect against Covid-19.
However, B.1.1.529 is known to have an unusually high number of mutations, with more than 30 in the key spike protein, the scientists noted.
The United Kingdom suspended from this Friday the flights from South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, Botswana, Eswatini and Zimbabwe.
