Cuba: The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, recalled the return to his country seven years ago of three of the five heroes who served unjust imprisonment in United States jails for fighting terrorism, reports Prensa Latina.
Unforgettable day that December 17, 2014, when Gerardo, Ramón and Antonio arrived in the homeland and Fidel’s promise that the Five would return was fulfilled, the president wrote on his Twitter social network account.
The Five, as they were known worldwide, suffered undeserved convictions in the United States after a legal process with various irregularities, allegedly for being part of an espionage network of the government of that country.
The reality is that the antiterrorist fighters monitored the movements of organizations that planned pirate attacks, sabotage actions and attacks against the Antillean Island, under the complicit gaze of the authorities of the northern nation.
Despite the fact that it could not be verified that they had access to risk information for national security, they remained in North American prisons for more than 16 years.
In the midst of the battle for the return of the five fighters, the historical leader Fidel Castro pronounced in a massive march of the Cuban people the historic phrase: “I only tell you one thing: they will return.”
On December 17, 2014, as a result of negotiations between the two countries, Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Rodríguez and Ramón Labañino returned to the island; since Fernando González and René González had returned to the country before, upon serving their sentences.
In Cuba, the five anti-terrorists received the status of Heroes of the Republic and the Playa Girón Order, in addition to the recognition of the citizens.
