Mayabeque, Cuba: The aging process of the Cuban population is behaving very rapidly. At the end of 2021, it was estimated that people aged 60 and over represented 21.9 percent of the population, being the only population group to increase and the most affected in the two years of the pandemic.

These figures require further improvement of the Health System, to respond to the increasingly growing needs of this age group.

During the World Health Assembly, in August 2020, the years between 2021 and 2030 are declared as “The Decade of Healthy Aging”, also proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December of the same year.

Older people will be the central axis of the plan, which will join the efforts of governments, civil society, international organizations, professionals, academic institutions, the media and the private sector in order to improve the quality of life of older people. these people, as well as those of their families and communities.

The areas of action are to change the way we think, feel and act towards age and aging, to ensure that communities foster the capacities of older people, to offer integrated care and primary health services that respond to them and to provide access to long-term care for all who need it.

The population is aging faster than in the past, and this demographic transition will affect almost every aspect of society. The world unites around the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

All countries and stakeholders have committed to leaving no one behind, and aim to ensure that all people can fulfill their potential with dignity and equality and in a healthy environment.
