Beijing: China today expressed hope that Russia and Ukraine will continue with the negotiation process started in the Belarusian city of Gopel to achieve a political solution to their tensions, Prensa Latina publishes.
Wang Wenbin, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, hoped that the talks would also lead to guaranteeing security, stability and lasting peace in all of Europe, ratifying Beijing’s support for any diplomatic initiative aimed at such purposes.
He also hoped that a reasonable solution would emerge from these meetings related with the concerns of all the actors involved.
Delegations from Russia and Ukraine yesterday held a meeting in Gopel and, according to Moscow authorities and they found important points to advance.
The exchange lasted five hours and they had as a priority the ceasefire in Ukraine and the hostilities. In addition, they agreed on the need to hold a second round of negotiations in the near future after consultations with their respective leaderships.
These are the first talks between the parties after the start of a Russian military operation in Ukraine on February 24, after the authorities of the self-proclaimed People’s Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk requested support to repel Kiev’s aggression.
Previously, Moscow recognized the independence and sovereignty of both territories and signed treaties of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance with their leaders, which included the establishment of diplomatic relations and military aid.
