Ashgabat: Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel sent a congratulatory message to his Turkmen counterpart, Serdar Berdimuhamedov, for his recent election as head of the country, the Island’s ambassador to Azerbaijan, Carlos Valdés, reported today.

The also designated as concurrent ambassador of the Antillean nation before the Ashgabat authorities, indicated that in his letter the Cuban head of state wished success to Berdimuhamedov in the performance of his high responsibilities.

At the end of the message, Díaz-Canel expressed his country’s will to strengthen friendly relations between the two nations.

The new president of Turkmenistan took office on March 19, a ceremony in which he expressed his government’s commitment to the course of neutrality and good neighborliness in foreign policy.

He also said that among his priorities is integrating the oil and gas industry into the international energy system.

The son of the former Turkmen head of state, Gurbangulý Berdymujamédov, won the presidential election with 72.97 percent of the vote.

The elections in the country took place on March 12 with the participation of three million 362 thousand 52 people, 97.17 percent of registered voters.
