Chileans Remember Salvador Allende

Santiago de Chile: Thousands of Chileans will remember today the Socialist President Salvador Allende and the thousands of victims of the dictatorship on the 47th anniversary of the coup against the democratic government of the Popular Unity, Prensa Latina publishes.

Although on this anniversary the massiveness of the acts will be reduced due to the limitations imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, opposition political parties and social and labor organizations will maintain the traditional actions of tribute to those killed and retaliated by the coup forces.

On September 11, 1973, a military regime headed by Augusto Pinochet, with the support of the right wing and the local oligarchy and the approval of the United States government, overthrew the Popular Unity government, led by Salvador Allende, and opened the way for 17 years of bloody dictatorship.

During the morning, representatives of political parties and social organizations will deposit floral offerings at the foot of the monument to Salvador Allende in front of the La Moneda palace and in front of the door of Morandé Street, where the martyr president used to access his offices at the house of government.

Another of the events scheduled for this Friday is a march called by the National Human Rights Coordinator to pay tribute to the thousands of victims of the dictatorship.

The pilgrimage will be led as every year by relatives and friends of detained, executed and / or disappeared to demand justice, truth and reparation for the victims of fascism, of which in around a thousand cases their whereabouts are still unknown.

The call is scheduled for 11.00 am local time at the central Plaza de los Héroes, from where they will advance through the Alameda and Paseo Ahumada to the General Cemetery, in the commune of Recoleta, where an act will be held next to the Memorial to the Disappeared Detainees of the military dictatorship.

Alicia Lira, president of the Group of Executed Politicians, called on the participants in the activities to strictly comply with the health and distancing measures provided by the authorities due to the pandemic.

Likewise, at 5:00 p.m. local time, a concentration is called by the 8 de Marzo Feminist Coordinator in the emblematic Plaza de la Dignidad, and at 9:00 p.m. a candlelight in the different communes throughout the country.

As every September 11, in the front of the emblematic National Stadium, used by the coup forces as a concentration and torture camp during the weeks that followed the coup, the victims will also be remembered.

For this, a fraction of the bar ‘Los de Abajo’ of the University of Chile, called to commemorate the date with a candle from 5:00 p.m. under the slogan ‘Neither forgiveness nor forgetfulness.
